MISSISSIPPI PUBLIC RADIO  "CONFLICTED" OVER TERRY GROSS & FRESH AIR

After Mississippi Public Broadcasting abruptly dropped Fresh Air  from its radio schedule July 8, its explanation of “recurring inappropriate content” in the talk show didn’t sit well with fans of the program.

Judith Lewis, executive director of the state-operated Mississippi Public Broadcasting TV and radio networks, decided to cancel Fresh Air one day after its interview with comedian Louis C.K., but MPB took a drubbing from angry listeners and snarky bloggers over the decision before conceding that host Terry Gross’s conversation with the star of the FX television series Louie prompted the cancellation.

Two weeks later, Lewis is reconsidering the decision, she told Current. MPB may put Fresh Air back in the schedule at a later hour. The state network needs some time for reflection “to decide what to do with a program that causes us consternation,” she said.....

...MPB’s earlier decision to drop Fresh Air, shortly after Lewis took charge last year, was a cost-cutting move, she said, and was reversed when listeners stepped up their pledge contributions.

The explanation for cancellation this month — “inappropriate content” — played out differently, prompting ridicule of MPB and the entire state. “Mississippi has modernized itself quite a bit lately,” Gawker commented. “No longer are African-Americans required by law to wear chains, nor are women required to remain indoors. But Terry Gross’s NPR show? Smut like that is still not allowed.”

MPB confirmed that Fresh Air’s fatal offense was Gross’s July 7 interview with Louis C.K. The segment included the comedian’s self-deprecating explanation for wearing a t-shirt when he has sex — to cover his middle-aged body. Gross introduced a clip in which his TV character learns why the word “faggot” is offensive to gays.....

SUSAN COWSILL NEXT AT BATON ROUGE'S RED DRAGON

From the Red Dragon's Chris Maxwell:

I have just received word from Greg Henry, the agent for Billy Joe Shaver, that his entire month of August shows has been cancelled. This is a tough one for us…..we cancelled roofapalooza to book this show and we were immediately sold out. Greg’s message indicated that they will try and re-book gigs in a few months, so hang in there gang. If you had reservations for Billy Joe, drop me a note that you have received this. Otherwise I will have to look up each e-mail and that would take many hours. Darden Smith’s November show is also off the books, though nobody had yet reserved. He is extending his European tour.

On the bright side, I hope to have the biggest announcement our little venue has ever made shortly. Want a hint? Let’s just say it will be the most expensive show we will ever do. I already know the price tag will scare away many people. But it will still be the most in demand show we ever do. Start saving your dollars and when I can make it official, get with me quickly. This one will be nuts!

....I got a bunch of responses regarding the cancellation of Billy Joe Shaver’s Aug 25 show. Unfortunately, most of them were artists looking to take the slot. Six in the first hour, thirteen total! But I still have not heard from 21 of the people who had show reservations. Please let me know that you are aware of the cancellation if you had seats reserved.

We are about half way to selling out Susan Cowsill’s Sat, Aug 7 show. If you missed Susan’s last Red Dragon show, you surely don’t want to miss this one. Susan has had four complete careers in the music biz….most people are lucky to get just one! She started out as a member of her famous family with numerous hit records including Flower Girl (used in “Dumb & Dumber). The Partridge Family tv show was based on her family! As an adult she was a member of the supergroup The Continental Drifters with members from the Bangles and the DBs. I attended one of their shows about ten years ago and sat next to one of their many fans, Jackson Browne! Susan’s third career is as a guest artist and vocalist on countless CDs including her good friend Darius Rucker (Hootie!). And finally, her solo career has been spectacular. Ask anyone who has caught her “covered in vinyl” series in New Orleans. People wait in lines for ages to get into those shows where she and her killer band play famous rock albums from start to finish.

Drop me a note if you would like to come to the show. We have been selling out most lately, so I suggest reserving early. It wouldn’t hurt to reserve for Mark Stuart & Stacey Earle’s show (Sat, Aug 14) while you are at it. Each show is $20 per seat and all $$ go directly to the artists!

BTW, for those who aren’t Dragon regulars, we do two shows per month in every month but December. The Billy Joe show was an extra one that we couldn’t turn down and would have been the third for August. We will not be replacing it, as we already have three in September. And we may just have to break down and add a HUGE show to October. If this happens, it will make local music history and will be ridiculously expensive for all of us (especially me, Ray and Martin……the Three Musketeers ride again!!!). More on that if it works out!!

Time to get off to work. Let me know if you got the cancellation message or if you need reservations for another show. Thanks!!

BR BLUEGRASS NEWS: CLAIRE LYNCH, JOAN BAEZ, THE MAYBELLES

From Jonathan Harris:

Greetings:  It appears that we will host Claire Lynch and her outstanding travel troupe (including Mark Schatz) to perform Sunday evening Nov. 14 at the Unitarian Church in Baton Rouge (Goodwood Blvd.).  The max seated capacity is 300.  If we are going to have a demand for 400-500, we need to have an alternate site.  I don't yet know what the social schedule might be Sunday or Monday.  There will be a JAM Sunday afternoon before the show - and Claire and her group may sit in.  We'll schedule Sunday's performance early to fit a week-nite school/work schedule.  Maybe Sunday or Monday will afford an opportunity to show a little hospitality; it depends upon their travel schedule.  I assume they will drive to Baton Rouge from Mobile on Sunday morning; the Monday destination is yet unsettled.
I urge everyone to support the BAEZ concert on Thursday, Aug. 5.  To be held in the performing arts theatre on St. Louis Street next to governmental building (City Hall) in Baton Rouge.  We will have a pre-concert party at the Roux House on Third Street at 5 pm, then a reception in lobby of the theatre where beverages will be sold.  Please, order your tickets this week.  Maybe we will have a hot bluegrass/olde tyme opener!

BELOW, THE FIRST MENTION EVER ON HOOTENANNYPOWER.COM OF .... THE MO-FO PARTY BAND!

MoFo Party Band to Play & Release New CD at Teddy's Juke Joint, August 7

(Fresno, CA) California's MoFo Party Band will bring their high-energy blues to Teddy's Juke Joint, 16999 Old Scenic Highway, Zachary, on Sat., Aug. 7, when they will release Low Down, their new CD. The Fresno-based band plays a combination of old-school Chicago blues and West Coast blues, with a hint of Rockabilly.and honky-tonk.

Low Down, the band's sixth CD, includes 10 original songs. MoFo recorded the new CD live at Westbeach Studios, Hollywood, CA, once owned by Frank Sinatra. MoFo Party Band provides a sound and show that are all about having a good time. “People tell us they like us because it always looks like we are having fun,” said Bill Clifton, the band's lead guitarist. “That's because we are and we love what we do.”

Co-founded by brothers John and Bill Clifton in 1989, the 4-piece MoFo Party Band delivers their music with heart and soul, the way the blues are meant to be played. Among their influences are Little Walter, Magic Slim and Muddy Waters. John Clifton plays harmonica and sings lead vocals.
“What is the sound of the MoFo Party Band?” asks associate editor Joe Reinartz of Pollstar magazine. Then he answers: ”It's raw and tasty, It's filled with sharp corners. It's the sound of grit and salt and mechanic's grease. These guys play mean music.”

The band successfully toured Poland in March 2010 and will return there in September 2010, performing at festivals and clubs throughout the country. A music reviewer from Gazeta Tezewski in Poland wrote, “We expect good American blues, but musicians from MoFo Party Band offer much more – truly spectacular show we have never seen before.”

In the US, MoFo plays 150 dates per year, including many major blues festivals such as San Francisco Blues Festival and Sonora Blues Festival, and they appeared on B.B. King Blues Festival tour.

19TH ANNUAL KERRVILLE WINE & MUSIC FESTIVAL - LABOR DAY WEEKEND

(Kerrville, Tex.) - The 2010 Kerrville Wine & Music Festival is coming up Labor Day Weekend, September 3 – 5. This annual celebration of songwriters and Texas Wines will be held at the Quiet Valley Ranch, 9 miles south of the Texas Hill Country resort community of Kerrville on TX Hwy 16. (www.kerrvillefolkfestival.com).

Not a typical “wine tasting” event, this 3-day festival is mostly about music and will feature three 6-hour evening concerts and two 2-hour afternoon concerts with over 2 dozen singer-songwriters.
We are excited about this year’s musical line-up and feel that it covers just about everyone’s musical tastes. In addition to our complement of word class singer songwriters, we’ve got some eclectic jazz with Snarky Puppy, Celtic rock with Dallas’ The Killdares, western swing with Austin’s Marshall Ford Swing Band, and Southern Rock/Soul/Crank music from Austin’s Uncle Lucius.
We are also thrilled about the return of some of our Kerrville favorites like Tom Kimmel (Nashville TN), Berkley Hart (San Diego CA), SONiA (Baltimore MD), and Kevin Welch (Wimberley TX).
There will also be 3:30–5:30 p.m. wine seminars on both Saturday and Sunday. The performers for the Friday evening concert include Tom Kimmel (Nashville TN), Acoustic Eidolon, Seth Glier (Massachusetts), Baskery (Stockholm Sweden), and Berkley Hart, Uncle Lucius (Austin TX), Matt King (Nashville TN), Corinne West & Kelly Joe Phelps (San Francisco CA), SONiA, The Killdares (Dallas TX). The Sunday night closing set will feature John Fullbright (Okemah OK), Kevin Welch (Wimberley TX), The Trishas (Austin TX), Marshall Ford Swing Band (Austin TX), and Snarky Puppy (Brooklyn NY/Denton TX). Each of the evening concerts start at 7 p.m. with the outdoor theater gates opening at 6 p.m.

The Saturday afternoon concert will feature finalists and/or winners from the 2010 Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Competition for Emerging Songwriters in an In-The-Round format including Chet O’Keefe (Nashville TN), Kate Klim (Boston MA), Andrew Delaney (Dallas TX), Wyatt Easterling (Nashville TN), and Kim Richardson (Mountain Home AR).  The Sunday afternoon concert will feature another group of emerging songwriters including Anthony daCosta, Raina Rose (Austin TX) and John Elliott (Los Angeles CA). Both afternoon concerts will start at 1 p.m. at the Threadgill Memorial Theater in the Quiet Valley Ranch campgrounds. (Pleasantville NY)

Yes, we’ll also have wine! The goal for the wine portion of the program is to send guests home with a greater understanding and appreciation for the wines of Texas. In recent years wines from Texas have compared favorably to those from France, California and the rest of the world. After 6 p.m. each evening, ten Texas wineries will have booths in the main stage theater where they will have tastes, glasses, and bottles of their current vintage available for sale.

There are also Wine Seminars held on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. The theme for each of the seminars will be “Start to Finish” where we will give participants samples of a four course meal starting with an appetizer, moving through to dessert, with each course paired with a Texas wine. The Saturday afternoon wine seminar will be “Italian”, and the Sunday theme will be “Southwestern.” Each of the seminars will begin at 3:30 p.m. on both Saturday, Sept 4 and Sunday, Sept 5 and will be held in the newly renovated Threadgill Theater in the Quiet Valley Ranch campgrounds.  The advance price for each seminar is $8 per person in addition to your festival admission. Once the festival starts, any remaining seats will be available in the main stage theater for $10 each.

A wide range of food and beverages are available in the theater and the campgrounds. We also have Arts & Crafts booths, escorted hill country bike rides, and like the Kerrville Folk Festival in the spring, the spectacular after-hours song circles and jam sessions in the campgrounds.
The three-day, Labor Day weekend advance discount adult ticket price is $90 and includes campground access and lot parking. Single-day, advance discounted tickets are $30 ($35 at the gate) for Friday, $35 ($40 gate price) for Saturday and $35 ($40 gate price) for Sunday. Advance ticket prices will expire at midnight, August 31. Tickets are available by calling the festival office at (830) 257-3600 or on-line at www.kerrvillefolkfestival.com.

A complete schedule of events, performer line-up and tickets for the festival as well as information on seminars, performers, camping, arts & crafts vending, RV sites and local accommodations can be found by visiting www.kerrvillefolkfestival.com or by calling the festival office at (830) 257-3600. You can also e-mail the festival office at info@kerrville-music.com.

Call to Artists - Creative Capital “Internet for Artists” Professional Development Retreat

The Division of the Arts is pleased to partner with the Creative Capital Foundation, the Louisiana Partnership for the Arts, and the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge to present a Professional Development Weekend Retreat designed to help Louisiana artists further their professional skills. The retreat will take place at the Shaw Center for the Arts in Baton Rouge Friday, September 24 – Sunday, September 26, 2010.  Established and emerging artists in all disciplines are eligible to submit an application. (Please see requirements below.) Twenty-four artists will be selected to participate.

Creative Capital, a New York City-based nonprofit organization, founded by Ruby Lerner, supports artists who pursue innovation in form and/or content.  www.creative-capital.org

The Professional Development Retreat “Internet for Artists” is designed to deliver skill-building opportunities to artists. The goal is to provide a cohesive structure that will help artists to organize, plan, and sustain their creative careers. This Workshop will address how internet resources can be used to build audience, expand community, amplify marketing and extend administrative resources. It will help participants expand their online presence and learn to harness the power of internet tools.

Artists who live outside of Baton Rouge that are selected to participate will be given a $100 stipend to help with costs of travel and lodging. Your participation fees for the workshop will be covered by the Division of the Arts and its partners.  Meals for all participating artists (Friday evening reception, breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday) will be provided.

We are now accepting applications for participation.  Submission requirements include an artist statement (that discusses your primary motivation for creating your work and your passion for your artistic discipline), a career impact statement (what do you see as the central challenges to your career now and how do you think this program will advance your work?), a resume, and a sample of work. (see http://www.crt.state.la.us/arts/ccinternet.aspx for the application form and instructions.)  Digital images will be accepted.  Please note:  your artist statement and career impact statement should not exceed one page, resume not to exceed 3 pages.

Applicant Requirements Artists should have demonstrated professional experience in their fields, with a career commitment and a degree of peer acceptance. • Individuals must be legal residents of Louisiana, have lived in the state for at least the 24 consecutive months prior to the application deadline, and reside in the state during the workshop period. • Individuals must be 18 years old by the application deadline. • Individuals enrolled in a degree or certificate granting program related to the program area are not eligible.

The deadline for submitting an application is Wednesday, August 4, 2010 by 5:00 pm.  Please send or email to:   Ann Russo , Louisiana Division of the Arts, P.O. Box 44247 , Baton Rouge , LA   70804 or email arusso@crt.state.la.us

Drew Landry sings at a commission-meeting about the oil-spill

===================================================================

To THE LOUISIANA CULTURAL COMMUNITY:

Dear Louisiana Cultural Community,
The Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation is concerned about the impact of the Gulf Coast oil spill to our cultural economy industries. We understand that this disaster will have an effect on Louisiana’s productivity and the livelihood of our cultural workers, from the fisherman working our waterways and shores, to culinary artists and the businesses that thrive on our seafood and tourism industry. We also understand that the effects of this disaster may not be limited to seafood and culinary workers and may affect artists, performers, writers and other cultural producers.

The Arts Council of New Orleans has been contacted by national foundations and service organizations asking about the effect of the oil spill on our cultural community. This survey is for individual artists, non-profits, and cultural businesses. LCEF in partnership with the Arts Council of New Orleans would like to ask you to please take a moment to complete this quick, anonymous survey to share your story.

If you have already completed this survey, you do not have to fill it out again. However, if you, or someone you know, has been affected directly by this tragedy, we would like to hear your story. If there is any information you would like to share with us that is not addressed in the survey, please reply to this email to tell your story.

Thank you in advance for sharing this vital information. We need to stay informed so we can better serve Louisiana and its cultural workers.

Sincerely,
Lisa Picone, Program Manager Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation

The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge, 225 Magazine and the Baton Rouge Area Convention and Visitors Bureau are proud to announce the release of Red Stick Sounds.  Red Stick Sounds is a brand new compilation of rare and exclusive tracks from your favorite Baton Rouge-inspired artists.

In an effort to raise awareness of Baton Rouge's rich musical landscape and to draw attention to creativity at a time when state and private funding of arts organizations are down across the cultural spectrum, Red Stick Sounds rallies more than a dozen musicians and artists with Baton Rouge ties to support our local Arts Council. Each has donated a unique recording to this collection. These are artists helping artists-the way it should be.

Red Stick Sounds is made possible by a generous donation from the Convention and Visitors Bureau. All proceeds benefit the Arts Council.

Produced by 225 Entertainment Editor Jeff Roedel, executive producers, Arts Council CEO Derek Gordon and 225 Publisher Julio Melara and mastered by PreSonus Audio Vice President Rick Naqvi, Red Stick Sounds features a variety of Baton Rouge's most dynamic and unique performers from blues, folk, jazz, pop and rock. These are recordings you will not find anywhere else! More than pleasing sounds, Red Stick Sounds is a love letter to our city complete with personal stories told by artists themselves. From Henry Gray reminiscing about learning to play his first blues licks to Harlan's John Norris testifying to the power of Baton Rouge's tight-knit artistic community, each artist has written a short essay on Baton Rouge specifically for this collection.

Red Stick Sounds retails for $10 and beginning June 30 can be downloaded as a deluxe bundle (13 songs and 16-page digital booklet) from 225 magazine at http://225batonrouge.com/redsticksounds/

A limited number of physical CDs in full-color digipaks will be available for purchase at Arts Council events as well as the Compact Disc Store on Jefferson Highway.

SI KAHN --  COURAGE

Wow!!! This is the best he's ever done!!!! I - Sonny Ochs - WRPI, Troy, NY

Legendary songwriter and activist Si Kahn celebrates his 66th birthday with this 16th collection of original songs, a powerful tribute to the people he¹s known and worked with over the past 45 years.  "Si has done a difficult thing here," says Grammy-winner Kathy Mattea, who adds her stunning vocals and passionate liner notes to COURAGE. "³With ease and grace, he¹s told a heroic story by looking through small windows into the lives of everyday people."

Like Si¹s signature song "Aragon Mill," several of the songs on COURAGE already have the ring of classics.  It¹s easy to imagine "Peace Will Rise" passing into the folk tradition, as "Aragon Mill" has done, being sung in pubs all over Ireland:

If those who prayed for violence, and shed their children¹s blood/ Can work for peace that lasts beyond all time / The enemies in other lands may some day staunch the flood/ Of war that breaks all hearts, both yours and mine

But if you think COURAGE is all seriousness, think again.  Si¹s trademark offbeat sense of humor (this is, after all, the man who wrote "Rubber Blubber Whale") shows up in the opening song about a Labrador retriever who¹s convinced he can fly, co-written with Tom Chapin as a love song for Tom¹s dog, the heroic if not exactly brilliant Otis.

Creative Loafing reviewer John Grooms calls COURAGE "one of the strongest of Kahn¹s career," adding, "This album has some of the sharpest, most spirited arrangements Kahn has presented, and his strong tenor is touched and highlighted by singer Kathy Mattea¹s gorgeous harmonies."

Si¹s previous CD THANKSGIVING was recognized by the Folk-DJ list as the #1 CD, #1 song and #1 artist for November 2007.

COURAGE was recorded at Double Time Studio in the North Carolina mountains, near Si¹s family log cabin (in which Si was neither born nor raised--but he does much of his songwriting there).  Banjo genius Jens Krüger of The Krüger Brothers not only produced and arranged the songs; he played all the instruments (except the oodoo, whatever an oodoo is) and wrote original instrumentals to go with several of them.  Jens¹ daughter Anja Krüger makes her CD debut with harmony vocals on ³Going Up the Mountain,² the closest thing to a rocker Si has done yet.

COURAGE is being released concurrently with Si¹s latest book Creative Community Organizing: A Guide for Rabble-Rousers, Activists and Quiet Lovers of Justice.  The lyrics to eight of the 16 songs on COURAGE are included in the book, along with many other original and traditional songs.

QUAKER BENEDICTION

When the song of the angel is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flocks,
The work of Christmas begins:
   To find the lost,
   To heal the broken,
   To feed the hungry,
   To release the prisoner,
   To rebuild the nations,
   To bring peace among brothers,
To make music in the heart.

SAVING CAJUN & ZYDECO HISTORY

Hundreds of early Rendez-vous des Cajuns broadcasts, featuring some of the greatest names in Cajun music, have now been preserved for all time.

As of the now, the first six years of performances — almost 300 episodes — have been digitally remastered by experts at the Center for Louisiana Acadian Studies at UL's Dupre Library.

"We helped to fund it, and they did the transfer," said Larry Miller, chairman of the Cajun Music Hall of Fame in Eunice.....

Bagasse Boyz Reviewed

The reviews are starting to roll in on our new CD . . .

Here is one from Bob Cherry of *CYBERGRASS® - The Internet Bluegrass Music Magazine (URL http://www.cybergrass.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=5661)*

*You Can Dress 'Em Up But You Can't Take 'Em Nowhere*

The Boyz latest release, /You Can Dress 'Em Up But You Can't Take 'Em Nowhere/ is a mixture of styles as was their previous album, /Not Your Daddy's Bluegrass/.  The Boyz latest album is presented as the /The Fabulous Bagasse Boyz Bluegrass Hour/ on KRUD in Albany, Louisiana with Doug Anderson (The Larry Wallace and and the Patchwork String Band) and Buz Sibley (The Cane Grinders and The Way-Goners).  This is second entertaining album by The Fabulous Bagasse Boyz that I have been fortunate enough to review.  The Boyz have a comical wit that makes listening to their music quite entertaining.  More than just good music, there is a jovial air that surrounds them as well.

This program consists of 20 songs and 20 announcer tracks for a total of 40.  This makes for an interesting presentation that is as unique as this band, their humor and their music.  This allows the listener to hear just the music...Just the commentary...Or both.  It is, however, the music AND the humor that keeps it all together.  The album plays out like a story presented in a radio DJ fashion.  The story gives one a good look at the band and a fresh style with a not so formal presentation.

The Fabulous Bagasse Boyz play bluegrass, bluegrass styled music and more.  The album covers a lot more than bluegrass as the listener will hear "Here Comes My Baby", a Cat Stevens tune and a Jim Croce favorite, "Age".  You'll get some Bob Dylan and even Lilley Loesser's famous "I Got Spurs That Jingle Jangle Jingle."  The Boyz tie it together with traditional tunes such as "Pretty Saro", "East Virginia Blues", Flowers of Edinburgh", and "Mountain Girl."  Filling it all in are songs written by Hans 'Fritz' Mayers, the band's banjo musician.

The music it intertwined with dialog from the fictitious radio station KRUD.  The first half of the program is sponsored by stylish "White Socks" is a good indication of where things are going for the rest of the album. The latter half is sponsored by "Moist Towelettes." The Boyz may just be right -- You Can Dress 'Em Up But You Can't Take 'Em Nowhere.  Sometimes, you just have to get serious and toss all seriousness aside.  That is the nature of this album.

The harmonies are very good and when you dress the Boyz up just a bit, they put their talents to work.  "Pretty Saro" is an excellent example of what the Boyz can do when, and if, decide to get serious.  Doug's mandolin work on "East Virginia Blues" illustrates the bluegrass qualities as the banjo fills in.  Yes, the Boyz can put together some mighty fine music when they get a mind to.  Bob Dylan's, "I Shall Be Released" works here with the bluegrass instrumentation.

Buz Sibley guests on the album and provides fiddle on the Texas Swing track, "There's a New Moon, Over My Shoulder" and other tracks.  Doug Anderson's F5 mandolin is an essential part of this album as well.
After all, bluegrass is more than bass, banjo and guitar!  You gotta have a fiddle in the band and bluegrass isn't bluegrass without a mandolin.

If you're looking for the super-produced, and reproduced, spit and polished perfection of music, well, this ain't it!  If you're looking for something original, entertaining and fun, well, give this album a spin.  I find myself listening to the Boyz more than some of the hifalutin' super fancy chrome-plated spit-polished bluegrass productions out there today.  One thing is for sure -- after listening to this album, it is apparent that /You Can Dress 'Em Up But You Can't Take 'Em Nowhere/!

Willi Sager plays the Bass while Rex Hall picks Guitar and Hans 'Fritz' Mayers plays the Banjo and some Mandolin and they all share vocals -- That's the The Fabulous Bagasse Boyz.  The band gets their name, Bagasse, from the biomass remaining after sugarcane or sorghum stalks are crushed to extract their juice.

HootenannyPower Playlists

Comments: Love your show, but you need to update your playlists.  Please.  I try to write down the names of the artists and songs I like during the show, but sometimes miss the backannounce.  I know you have to file the playlists...just put them up here...please.

From Taylor:

I used to be able to open this website and update it just after the close of the radio show, but the current station computer in the studio, which I use to type my playlist during the show Saturday nights, can't handle all the pop-ups and javascript junk that Network Solutions throws at it in order to update.  Then, if I don't have time Sunday to get to my office and post the list to the site, it is not easy to grab the time  away from law stuff during the week.  I have generally been able to get it up during the week after the show.  But, I can do this to make sure those who want a playlist can get it quickly ...  Within the half hour after the show ends (so about 12:30 am Sunday), I send an email posting the playlist to www.folkradio.org.  I can include anyone who so wishes on the "bcc" of the email.  Just write me ( taylor@wrkf.org ) and ask me to include you in the playlist emails.

Lilli Lewis is an up and coming singer/songwriter who plays at Garrison's Global Coffee Bar every Friday night and Sunday afternoons in Hammond.  I guess you could say her sound is kind of "earthy/bluesy" but her songs are much harder to categorize.  All I can say is, everyone who hears her thinks she's the next big thing.

Her web site is www.lillilewis.com and she's at www.myspace.com/lillilewis.  Please check her out and add her to your calendar: Lilli Lewis, Garrison's Global Coffeebar, 105 South Cate Street, Hammond, LA 70401, (985) 419-1180, Fridays: 7:30-9:30pm, Sundays: 3-5pm

Remember, The Neutral Ground Coffee House in New Orleans  is Louisiana's oldest regular folk venue.  There's ALWAYS somebody worth hearing on their schedule, year 'round (an assertion supported by NPR's interview with owner Philip Melancon on Saturday, Aug 2, 2003's Weekend Edition, with Philip playing Roy Rogers songs on accordion!)  If you'll be in the Nawlins area, be sure to check the Neutral Ground calendar at www.neutralground.org  (Since Katrina, the website has not shown a current schedule, but it has a guestbook for artists and customers to check in)

YOU'RE ON TOO LATE FOR ME, TAYLOR!

People do express that sentiment to me oftimes, but the station schedule is guided by all sorts of important considerations, and I'm happy to continue to have the opportunity to bring this alternative music to our area and support the touring performers in whatever way possible. Now, my friend Rich Warren in Chicago on WFMT hosts a show called The Midnight Special, which has been around since the 1950s, when the host was Mike Nichols. Rich loves the late-night hours for folk music, but he knows some folks can't listen to the radio at that time (asleep? out partying?), so he has detailed instructions for taping his show, which can be done on a video recorder (vcr). Recognizing that his station's FM frequency is different, and you'd want to tune to 89.3, here's a link to Rich Warren's "manual" for taping a two-hour radio show on your VCR. Thanks, Rich.
